Raekot is a place where everyone knows what's going on with their neighbor. Our store sits right there in the middle of it all. We sell the basic groceries that every house needs. You won't find anything too strange or expensive on our shelves. Just the staples like wheat, dal, and spices. The shop has a high ceiling which helps keep it cool when the sun is beating down on the roof. I usually start the day by sweeping the front and arranging the biscuit packets. It’s a routine that hasn't changed in a long time. Some people come in just to chat for ten minutes before they even buy a single item. That's just the way it is in a town like this. We don't have a computer system or anything like that. I just use a pen and a notebook to keep track of what we owe the suppliers. The wooden counter has some scratches from years of dragging heavy sacks across it. It gives the place a bit of character I guess. When the harvest season comes around the whole town gets busy and we see a lot of new faces passing through. But mostly it's just the same people we've known for decades. We try to keep enough stock so no one has to go home empty-handed. It's hard work and my back hurts sometimes but we keep the doors open anyway.
