Running a shop in Ludhiana means you're always on your feet. We do the grocery side of things but also handle the bill payments because people find it easier to do everything in one go. It gets a bit confusing when someone is buying sugar and another person is trying to pay their electricity bill at the same time. I have to switch between the computer and the weighing scale pretty fast. The shop gets dusty because of the road traffic nearby so I’m always wiping down the counter with an old rag. We have some plastic chairs tucked in the back for when we get a break but that doesn't happen often during the daytime. People come in frustrated about their bills sometimes and we just try to get the transaction done so they can go home. We don't have any big fancy slogans. The name "Happy" was my father's idea and it just stuck over the years even if we are tired. The shelves are packed with everything from toothbrushes to cooking oil. We try to keep things where we can find them but in the rush things get misplaced. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes if I’m honest. But the locals don't seem to mind much. They just want their stuff and their receipts. We keep the lights on late because that's when the office people come by. It's a long day but it's what we know.
