Out on Bhattian Road, near Village Jaunpur in Amra, is where we set up Peridot Knitwears. It’s a bit out of the way, which is nice because it’s much quieter than the center of the city. We work with knits, mostly sweaters and heavier stuff for when the weather gets cold. The building is a simple one, mostly just open space for the knitting machines to run. We have a small office in the corner for the books, but mostly we are out on the floor with the yarn. It can get pretty chilly in the mornings before the machines have had a chance to warm up. We get our yarn from local suppliers and spend the day making sure the patterns come out right. Sometimes a needle breaks and we have to spend an hour taking the carriage apart to fix it. That’s just how it goes with knitting. We don’t have a website with fancy photos or a marketing team. Most of our business is just word of mouth from other folks in the Amra area. We have a few people from the village working with us, so it really feels like a neighborhood thing. The road outside can get very muddy when it rains, making deliveries a bit of a chore for the drivers. We keep a pot of tea going all day and just focus on the stacks of knitwear growing on the long tables. It’s not complicated work, just a matter of keeping the machines running and the tension on the yarn right so the final product looks decent.
