If you find yourself on Gill Road near S G Road, you’ll see Amarjeet Departmental Stores. We have been stocking the shelves here for a long time now. It’s a lot of work carrying the crates of cold drinks and heavy bags of rice inside every morning. The aisles are a bit narrow because we try to keep as much as we can in stock so people don’t have to go elsewhere. You can find almost anything for the kitchen here, from local spices to the big soap bars. I usually stand behind the wooden counter near the front. It’s got a few scratches on it from years of sliding bags across to customers. We don't use those fancy barcode scanners for everything; sometimes I just know the price by heart or check the little notebook I keep. The lights overhead flicker once in a while but they stay on well enough. It gets crowded in the evenings when everyone is getting off work and needs to pick up milk or bread for dinner. We know most of the families around Gill Road by their first names. It’s just a neighborhood store where the floor gets a bit muddy when it rains and the door hinges squeak. We keep the fridge stocked and the shelves as full as we can manage. It’s simple work but it’s what we do every single day without much fuss.
