The National Engineering Co.

We have been down here at 22, Netaji Subhas Road for quite some time now. If you know this part of the city, you know how busy it gets with all the trucks and people moving things back and forth. The National Engineering Co. is basically just a group of us who know our way around machinery and spare parts. It is not a fancy office by any means. There are stacks of catalogs on the desks and the smell of grease is pretty much everywhere. Most days we are just answering the phone and trying to help someone find a specific valve or a tool they can’t get anywhere else. It’s a lot of manual work and checking sizes. Sometimes the inventory gets a bit messy, but we usually find what is needed after a bit of looking. The neighborhood is loud, and we usually have tea brought in from the stall around the corner twice a day. We aren't doing anything groundbreaking, just keeping things moving for the local workshops. It gets hot in the afternoons, but the fans keep us going. People stop by just to ask questions about how to fix their equipment. We don’t mind. It’s how things have always been here. You just get used to the rhythm of the street and the constant clanking of metal. It is honest work and it keeps us busy from morning until the shutters go down in the evening.
