We are based at 152, B.K. Paul Avenue in Kolkata. The building is one of those old ones with high ceilings and thick walls. It stays relatively cool inside even when the Kolkata heat is at its worst outside. Our work revolves around machinery for the tea industry. It’s a very specific niche and we’ve been at it for many years. The office is full of blueprints and technical drawings. We have some heavy parts lying around on the floor sometimes. It’s not a showroom; it’s a place where work actually happens. There’s usually the smell of grease and old paper in the air. We spend a lot of time on the phone with estates and factories from all over the country. The traffic on B.K. Paul Avenue is always heavy, so the sound of horns is something we just live with. We have a small workshop area where we check things before they go out. It’s messy work sometimes. We don’t wear suits here; it’s more about being able to get your hands dirty if a machine needs looking at. Our staff is mostly older guys who have been in the tea business their whole lives. They know these machines better than anyone. We don’t do much advertising. Most of our business comes from people who have known us for decades. It’s a traditional way of doing things, but it works for us. We just keep our heads down and get the machines ready.
