Our place, Static Hydraulic Pvt. Ltd., is inside the Behala Industrial Estate. Specifically, we are at Plot No. K/22 at 620 Diamond Harbour Road. If you know Kolkata, you know that Diamond Harbour Road is almost always packed with cars and buses. Getting into the estate can be a bit of a challenge in the mornings. Once you are inside the gates, though, it’s a different world. It’s full of warehouses and small factories like ours. We have a decent-sized plot where we keep all the hydraulic components. The air always smells a bit like hydraulic oil and old metal, which is something you just get used to after the first week. We have a small crew of guys who have been with us for a long time. We aren't big on meetings or long emails. If something needs to be fixed or built, we just stand around the piece and figure it out together. The office part of the building is just a small corner with a couple of chairs and a table where we keep the ledgers. We prefer being out on the floor where the real work happens. It’s often loud and messy, but it feels like we are actually making something useful. When the sun starts to set, we clean up the tools and make sure everything is locked up tight before joining the traffic on the road again. It takes a while to get home, but that’s just how life in the city is for us.
