My office is located up on the 3rd floor at 153 Rash Behari Avenue. It’s right in the middle of everything in the Kolkata 700 029 area. Being a chartered accountant here means there’s never really a dull moment if you look out the window. I spend most of my working hours looking at balance sheets and trying to figure out where a few paise might have gone missing. It’s just me and a small bit of help in the office. I don’t run a massive firm with hundreds of employees. It’s a much more personal and quiet setup. People come up the stairs, usually a bit out of breath from the climb, and we sit down to talk about their accounts and taxes. I actually like it this way because I can see every file and document myself. There’s a lot of paperwork involved in this profession, honestly much more than most people realize. My shelves are pretty full of binders and folders from over the years. I’ve lived and worked in India all my life, so I have a decent understanding of how the systems and rules work here. It’s not about being the biggest office on the block; it’s about being someone people can rely on. Sometimes I have to stay quite late when the tax season is in full swing. The view from the third floor is mostly other old buildings and the tops of the trees. I drink my tea, do my calculations, and try to help people stay sorted.
