S. M. Engineering

Down in Kolkata, at Motilal Colony, that’s where S. M. Engineering is located. It’s near the Raj Bari post office, a place we’ve called home for many years. We are basically a small engineering outfit. We spend our days working on whatever parts or repairs come through the door. The humidity in Kolkata can be tough on the machines, so we spend a lot of time on maintenance too. It’s a local operation, nothing too fancy. The workshop has that smell of grease and metal that you’d expect. We have a few guys who have been with us since the start, and they really know their way around the lathes and drills. We don’t have a big sales team or anything like that. It’s usually just the phone ringing or someone walking in with a blueprint or a broken part. We try to be helpful and give a fair timeline for the work. Some days are quieter than others, which gives us time to clean up and organize the tools. But usually, there’s enough to keep us busy from morning till evening. We’ve seen the colony grow and change around us while we just keep our heads down and focus on the engineering tasks. It’s a living, and it’s something we take pride in doing properly without making a big fuss about it. We’re just regular people doing a job we understand.
