Rathi Ice Factory

The factory is located right on JJ Road. It is a pretty loud place because of the big ice-making machines we have running all day and night. This is not a shop where you would come to sit down and eat a treat. It is more of a workspace where we produce large blocks and bags of ice for other businesses. There is almost always water on the floor from the melting ice, so we have to wear heavy rubber boots for most of the day. The hum of the compressors is the main sound you hear, and it is loud enough that you often have to shout a bit to be heard by anyone else. We have trucks pulling up to the loading area on JJ Road at all hours of the early morning. It is a lot of heavy physical lifting, moving those frozen blocks onto the scales and then loading them into the back of the vehicles. The walls are mostly bare concrete, and we keep the lighting very simple and practical. It stays quite cold inside the building even when the sun is really beating down on the road outside. We have a small office area with an old metal desk where we keep track of all the daily orders. Sometimes the machines break down and we have to spend half the night trying to fix them. It is messy, cold work, but it is just what we do to get by. We have been on this road for a long time and the neighbors know us.
