If you know Bagbazar, you know how the lanes are. Our place is at 3A, Uma Charan Mittra Lane, which is right in that thick of old Kolkata. The building has that classic look you only find in this part of town, with the high ceilings and the smell of damp stone when it’s humid. We handle a lot of facility stuff from here, which means our phones are usually ringing about leaks or cleaning schedules or security guards. It’s a small team of us sitting in the office. We usually have a few umbrellas leaning against the wall because you never know with the weather here. It isn’t a large space, but we make it work by keeping everything organized in old metal filing cabinets. Sometimes the street outside gets blocked by a rickshaw or someone moving furniture, and we just have to wait for the noise to die down. We’ve been at this address for a good bit now and the locals all know us. We don’t have a big sign outside, just the name on the door. People come in to ask about jobs or to report a problem at one of the buildings we look after. It’s a lot of coordination and checking lists. We don’t use a lot of big words or complicated systems, just honest work and making sure things get done as promised.
