Kavitha Tailoring School

Our tailoring school is located on the 5th floor of 14 B, Camac Street. This is a very busy commercial area of Kolkata, so the elevators are always full of people going to various offices. Kavitha Tailoring School is a bit different because we have rows of sewing machines instead of computers. When you walk in, you can hear the constant whirring of the motors and the sound of scissors cutting through fabric. We have large tables where we spread out the cloth for marking and cutting. The 5th floor gets some decent light during the day, which helps with the stitching work. It is not a fancy studio, just a practical space for people to learn a skill. We have rolls of thread in every color and stacks of pattern paper in the corners. People come here from all over the city to learn how to make clothes. Some stay for a few months, and others are here longer. We don't have a big marketing budget or a shiny reception area. Most of the time, the instructors are busy showing someone how to fix a hem or thread a needle. Camac Street is expensive and loud, but inside our rooms, it is all about the work at hand. We keep the windows shut to block out some of the traffic noise. It is a simple place where we focus on teaching the trade, one stitch at a time. It keeps us busy all day long.
