This Indian Institute of Technology office is situated over in Kolkata, right at AD 109/10 on Sa De Sarani in the Krishnapur area. It falls under the 24 Parganas North district. The area is quite built up and has that classic Kolkata feel with narrow lanes and a lot of activity at all hours. Our office is in a building that has been around for a while, so it has some character, even if the paint is peeling in a few spots. It gets quite humid here, especially during the monsoon, and we have several fans going at once to keep the air moving. It is a bit of a walk from the main road, so it’s relatively quiet once you get inside. We have a lot of books and technical manuals stacked on the shelves, and the desks are usually covered in notes and diagrams. It is a very studious environment but without the stiffness of a corporate office. We make our own tea in the corner and sometimes share snacks during the afternoon slump. There is no big marketing team or polished front desk here. It is just us researchers and staff members trying to stay on top of our assignments. We use the local post office at Krishnapur for all our mail. It’s a very local, unpretentious place to work, and we like the pace of it just fine.
