About Hastings Jute Mill – Industrial Plant & Machines in Kolkata
Hemanta Basu Sarani is always busy. If you come by 15-B, you’ll see the old gate for Hastings Jute Mill right there. It’s one of those spots in the city that hasn't changed much while everything else did. We spend most of our mornings dealing with the raw fiber. The air has that specific smell of jute, which you get used to after a few days. The machinery makes a certain hum that fills the whole building. It's not a quiet place. People are usually moving around, shifting bundles or checking the stacks. The windows are high up and let in some light, but it’s mostly about getting the work done on the floor. Most of us have been here for a while. You see the same faces every morning when the shift starts. Sometimes the traffic outside on the Sarani gets so loud you can hear the horns over the equipment. We don't really do much fancy stuff here. It's just about the jute and making sure it goes where it needs to. The walls are thick, keeping it a bit cooler than the street outside during the summer months. We keep a small kettle in the corner for tea breaks. It's a simple setup at 15-B. We don't have a big reception area or anything. You just walk in and the work is right there in front of you. It’s been like this for a long time.
