We are located at 145 Ajay Nagar, right in the Santoshpur area of Kolkata. It’s a pretty standard setup for a garment place. We have the cutting tables on one side and the sewing machines lined up on the other. It gets a bit dusty with all the lint and fabric scraps, but we sweep up at the end of every shift. The lighting isn't the best in the back corner, so we had to put in some extra lamps. It’s a local operation. Most of the people working here have lived in Santoshpur their whole lives. We know each other’s families and what’s going on in the neighborhood. When the monsoon hits, the street outside can get a bit flooded, so we have to make sure the fabric is kept high off the floor. It’s just one of those things you deal with. We don’t have a big corporate office or anything. There’s a small desk where I keep the ledger and the phone. I spend most of my time walking between the machines to see how the work is progressing. Sometimes we have a lot of tea and biscuits while we wait for a delivery to arrive. It’s a practical way to run a business. We focus on making the clothes and making sure they are packed right before they go out the door. It’s loud and it’s messy, but it’s what we do every day.
