Down at 20/B, A.K. Md. Siddique Lane, you’ll find Elmac Foods. It’s one of those narrow lanes where it’s hard for two cars to pass each other, but we manage. The building is old and has that specific feel of a long-running business in an old city. Inside, there is always something going on. We handle a lot of food processing, so there is the constant sound of machines and the clinking of bottles or jars. It’s usually pretty humid, and the smells change depending on what we are making that day. We have a small office near the front, but most of the action happens in the back. The walls are a bit stained and the floors show the wear of many years of foot traffic. We aren't trying to be the biggest company out there. We just want to get through the daily orders and make sure the quality is okay. We have a lot of regular workers who have been with us through thick and thin. Sometimes the deliveries are late because of the traffic in the lane, which is just something we’ve learned to live with. We don’t have any polished mission statements on the walls. We just have a calendar and a list of things that need to be done before we can lock up and go home. That is pretty much how our days go.
