In the Dum-Dum area of Kolkata, specifically at Nagerbazar, you’ll find Jolina Apartment. That’s where our Deloitte Haskins & Sells office is located at number 74, Rastra Guru Avenue. It’s an apartment building, so it has a different feel than a huge glass office tower. We’ve got desks squeezed into the rooms and files stacked up in the corners. Doing audit and tax work means we are often buried in spreadsheets and old receipts. The neighborhood is very traditional Kolkata, with narrow streets and lots of people walking around. You can hear the sounds of the city through the windows—the horns, the vendors, and the general bustle. It gets a bit hectic during tax season, and we often stay late, drinking tea and double-checking numbers. We don’t have a big cafeteria, so we usually just bring our tiffins from home or grab something from a nearby stall. It’s a very grounded way to work. We know each other well because we’re in fairly close quarters. We don’t use much of that corporate language you might expect from a big name. Here, it’s just about getting the accounts right and making sure the paperwork is in order. It’s a practical, no-nonsense office where the focus is strictly on the work at hand. We keep our heads down and just keep at it until the job is done and the clients are satisfied.
