I’ve been at 24, Dr. Narayan Ray Sarani for quite a few years now. Kolkata is always moving fast, and this corner of 700 006 is no different. My name is Anusree Basu, and this is where I spend most of my time. It is an older building with some character, and the walls have a few marks that I never got around to painting over. I get in around 9 every morning, just as the street starts to get really busy. There is a small tea stall just a few doors down where I get my first cup of the day. The tea is always hot and way too sweet, but it’s a ritual now. My workspace is simple. I have a large wooden desk that I bought second-hand. It’s a bit scratched up, but it’s sturdy and holds all my papers. I don’t use any fancy filing systems, just stacks that make sense to me. Sometimes the ceiling fan makes a clicking noise, but I barely notice it anymore. The mail gets delivered around noon, and I usually have a chat with the postman. It’s just me here, and I like the quietness of the afternoon. People stop by for different things, and I just handle them as they come. I don’t have a big sign outside or any marketing materials. It’s just a place where work gets done in its own time. I have a small calendar on the wall where I mark the days off with a thick red pen.
