Our office is tucked away in Flat 3B at 16A Tala Park Avenue here in Calcutta. It’s a decent spot because the area isn't as chaotic as the city center, though finding a parking space can still be a bit of a headache sometimes. We have been working as chartered accountants from this residential building for quite a while. It feels more like a home than a stiff corporate office, which suits us just fine. There are four of us usually working at the desks, surrounded by tall stacks of ledgers and various tax forms. We spend a lot of our time looking at screens and typing out reports for people who need their accounts sorted. Sometimes the internet acts up or we run out of ink in the middle of a big job, but we manage. The neighborhood is quiet enough that we can actually hear ourselves think while we are doing calculations. We don’t have a big sign outside or a receptionist at a front desk. If you come by, you just ring the bell and one of us will let you in. We have a small kitchen area where we make way too much coffee during the audit season. It’s a straightforward life here. We just focus on the numbers and try to help folks keep their businesses running without any tax trouble. It’s not flashy, but it is our daily routine and we are used to the way things work in this little corner of West Bengal.
