We are set up at Gajanan Pandit Barate’s place in Shahapur. Our focus is on organic farming, or jaivik sheti as we call it around here. It’s not the easiest way to farm, and it takes a lot more patience than the usual methods. We formed this company because a few of us in Shahapur wanted to move away from using so many chemicals on our land. Our office is just a part of the house where we keep our records and meet up to talk about natural fertilizers and composting. It’s a bit slow-going sometimes, and explaining to people why organic takes longer can be a bit of a chore. We don't have a big budget for fancy equipment, so we do a lot of things the old-fashioned way. Gajanan’s place is usually busy with someone coming over to ask about seeds or how to handle a specific insect problem without spraying poison. We’re just regular people who care about the soil in Shahapur. The paperwork is often a bit behind, and we spend more time in the dirt than behind a desk. It’s a mission for us, but it’s a practical one rooted in daily chores and the reality of the seasons. We just try to help each other out and make sure the food we grow is as clean as it can be.
