Ambuja Cements Ltd.

Working out here at the Mattancherry Wharf on Willingdon Island is different from the city. The air smells like the sea and there is always a lot of noise from the ships. We are at the Ambuja Cements spot. It’s mostly about moving bags and keeping track of the stock. It’s a dusty job, that’s for sure. My clothes are usually covered in grey powder by noon. We have a small office where we handle the papers, but I spend most of my time out by the loading area. The guys who work here have been doing this for years. We know the routines of the cranes and the trucks. It’s a busy place when a shipment comes in. We have to move fast then. When it’s quiet, we sit and watch the water for a bit. Willingdon Island is a bit isolated, so we bring our own lunch. We don't have many shops nearby. We just focus on getting the cement out to the builders who need it. It’s a lot of physical work, but we are used to it. The company has a big name, but here on the ground, it’s just us doing the daily chores. We check the bags, sign the logs, and make sure the trucks are loaded right. It’s not fancy work, but it’s what we do. The salt air eats at the metal, so we’re always fixing things.
