Our shop is over in Mankammathota, right across from where Dr. Jayaram has his clinic. We deal in marbles, which means our floors and clothes are always covered in a bit of white stone dust. We have a lot of heavy slabs standing against the walls, and they take a lot of muscle to move around so people can see the patterns. The office is just a small corner of the main area where we keep the books and handle the daily cash. It’s a very hands-on kind of place. We spend a lot of time showing different patterns and explaining how the stone will look once it is finally laid down and polished. Mankammathota is a busy area, so there’s always noise from the street and the shops nearby. We’ve been here for a while and many of the local masons and builders are regular visitors who just stop by for a chat. Sometimes the weather makes it hard to move the marble, especially when it rains and the ground gets slippery. We don't use any big words or fancy sales pitches when people come in. We just show the stone as it is and let the customers decide for themselves. It’s a lot of manual labor, often using water to clean the slabs so the natural colors and veins show through properly. Every piece of marble is different, so we spend a lot of time sorting through our stock. It’s a simple life, focused on stone and making sure people get what they saw in the yard.
