Baba Brick Field

Down in Village Jatoli near Post Gajner, we have our brick field set up. It’s a big open space in District Kanpur where we spend most of our time. Baba Brick Field is pretty much what the name says, a place where we turn the local soil into bricks for building houses and walls. The work changes with the seasons because you can’t really burn the bricks when the monsoon hits. During the dry months, the place is buzzing with activity and smoke from the chimneys. It’s a very local operation, with most of the people working here coming from the nearby areas. We don't use much in the way of high-tech machinery, it’s mostly just hands and shovels and fire. The roads around Jatoli can be a bit rough, especially when the heavy trucks are loaded down with bricks and trying to get out to the main road. We don't have a marketing team or anything like that. People just know we are here and they come to us when they are starting a new project. It’s hard, honest work that makes your back ache, but it’s what we know how to do. We just keep the fires going and the bricks moving out to wherever they are needed in the district. It’s a simple life out here in the fields of Kanpur and we like it.
