Nai Sarak is one of those places that is always full of people. Pokars Sweets is situated right there among all the other shops. Every morning we sweep the front step and look at the crowds already starting to gather. We have a lot of metal trays that need to be washed and dried. The air inside the shop feels heavy when the weather is humid. We do not have a lot of fancy decorations, just the shelves and the containers we have used for years. Most people who come in are regulars who live nearby or work in the local market. We know their faces even if we do not always know their names. Sometimes we run out of bags and have to wait for the delivery to arrive. It is a lot of standing around and waiting, then suddenly everyone comes in at once. The counter is scratched up from years of coins and keys being dropped on it. We do not have any big mission, we just keep the shop open and the shelves full. It gets very loud on Nai Sarak during the festivals, and we have to work even harder then. At the end of the day, we count the cash and make sure the door is locked tight. It is just another day of work for us here in the heart of the city.
