We’ve been here at 38 B in Jawahar Colony on Tonk Road for a good while now. It gets pretty dusty out there with all the traffic passing by, but we keep the doors open anyway. Most days start early with a cup of tea and checking what came in the day before. People bring in all sorts of machines that stopped working right when they needed them most. It is usually a fridge that gave up in the summer heat or a washing machine making a weird knocking sound. We just sit here and look at the parts, trying to figure out why they stopped. It is not fancy work, just something that needs doing. Sometimes the parts are hard to find and things take longer than we would like. The shop isn’t huge, but it is enough for what we do. My hands are usually a bit greasy by noon. We talk to the neighbors a lot when they walk past. It is funny how you get to know everyone by what kind of appliance they own. If the sun is hitting the front window too hard, we pull the shade down a bit. Tonk Road is always loud, but you get used to it after a few years. We just try to get through the stack of work on the bench. There is always someone coming in with a question about a fan or a stove. We do what we can with what we have here.
