We are over by the Police Wireless Office. If you know the area, it’s not hard to find us. We make bricks. It is a messy job, honestly. My clothes are usually covered in red dust by noon. We spend most of our time out in the yard under the sun. The kiln stays hot, and there is always smoke around. It is just a small operation. We don’t have fancy machines for everything. A lot of it is still done by hand, stacking and moving. When the rain starts, things get complicated. The mud makes everything heavy. We have been here for a while now. Local guys come to us when they are putting up a wall or fixing a house. We don’t do much talking, just show them the stacks. The bricks are what they are. Sometimes they are a bit different in color depending on the soil we got that week. It is just part of the process. We keep a ledger on a wooden desk and that is about it. It’s quiet mostly, except for when the trucks arrive to load up. We don’t have a big staff, just a few of us who know the routine. If you need some bricks, you just show up and see what we have ready. It's a simple way to make a living, even if it's hard on the back. We just get on with the work and try to stay out of the heat when we can.
