At 107/34 J. N. Lahari Road, you will find Mahua Steel. It is a heavy place, full of metal rods and sheets. The ground is often covered in a fine layer of iron dust, and the air has that sharp metallic scent. J. N. Lahari Road is a bit of a trek to get to, but it’s where we do our business. We have a big open area where the trucks come in to drop off the raw material. It’s loud, especially when the steel is being moved around or cut to size. We don't have a carpeted office or air conditioning. We just have the workspace and a small corner with a wooden desk for the bills and invoices. The heat can be quite a lot in the middle of the day, so we drink a lot of water and keep the big fans running. We’ve got some old chairs for when we need a sit-down, but mostly we are on our feet moving things. The neighbors are mostly other industrial shops, so we all know the sound of a hard day's work. It’s not the kind of place you come to see something pretty. It is a place where actual physical work gets done. We use heavy gloves and old boots because the edges are sharp. By the end of the day, everyone is tired. It is just the way the steel business is.
