Rao Brick Fields

You can find Rao Brick Fields at 568-S in Shahpur. It’s a big open space because you really need a lot of room for the kilns and the drying area to work properly. When the wind blows across the fields, it carries the smell of burning wood and wet earth, which is something you get used to after working here for a week or so. I’ve been around these fields long enough that I don't even notice the smell anymore. We have long rows and rows of bricks laid out to dry in the sun. It’s all about the weather for a business like ours. If it looks like rain, we’re in for a lot of work and have to scramble to cover everything with big plastic sheets. It’s hard labor, bending over all day in the sun, but the workers are used to the grind. We aren't some big company with a headquarters in a city skyscraper. Our office is just a small brick room with a tin roof that gets very loud whenever it rains. We deal with all sorts of people, from big construction contractors to a local guy just needing a few dozen bricks to fix his back porch. We try to be fair and just get the job done without any fuss. There’s no secret to what we do here; it’s just earth, water, and heat. Sometimes we have tea together before heading home.
