S. K. Glass

S. K. Glass is located at No. 83/2 in the B Hally Compound. We’re right near the railway crossing, so we hear the trains go by all day long. You get used to the vibration after a while. It’s a bit of a rough-and-ready location, but it suits the kind of work we do. We deal with glass of all types, mostly for local builders and homeowners who need repairs. The compound is shared with a few other workshops, so there’s always someone around to chat with during breaks. I started this place about ten years ago with just a few crates and a cutting table. Now we have a bit more space, but it’s still packed to the rafters. We don't have a fancy showroom. If you want to see what we have, you just walk into the back and look through the racks. It’s a bit dusty, but that’s how it goes when you’re cutting glass all day. Sometimes the deliveries get delayed because of the train gate being closed, but we just work around it. My nephew helps me out with the heavy lifting. We don't spend money on flyers or ads. We just try to be fair with the people who come in. It’s a simple business. We close up when the sun goes down and start again the next morning when the first train passes. It isn't a glamorous life, but it's ours. We make sure the glass is cut to the exact size requested every time. There is no room for mistakes with railway schedules.
