Tata Tea Ltd. has this spot at the Tata Spice Centre on Milne Road, right out on Willingdon Island. It’s a bit different from the rest of the city because you’ve got the water all around and the ships coming into the port. The air smells like salt and tea leaves most days. We spend a lot of our time in the warehouse or the sorting areas. It’s an old building, nothing like those new glass towers you see in the city. We’ve got high ceilings and big doors that let in the breeze from the harbor. Our daily routine is pretty simple: we check the tea, look over the spices, and make sure everything is where it should be. It’s a lot of walking on concrete floors and talking to the drivers who bring the loads in. We don't bother with much fancy stuff here. Most of us have been working on the island for years, so we know the shortcuts and the best places to grab a quick meal. The work is steady and keeps us busy from morning till evening. Sometimes the humidity is thick, and everyone moves a bit slower, but the work always gets finished. It’s just a group of us here at the spice centre, doing our part in a quiet corner of Willingdon Island. We like the way the light hits the water at the end of the shift.
