Down here at No. 73 K. P. K. Menon Road on Willingdon Island, the atmosphere is all about the port and the ships. Tata Global Beverages Limited has a big presence here, and you can really feel the history of the place. The salt air from the water hits you the moment you step outside, and there is always the sound of cranes and horns from the docks. Our building is practical, built for moving goods rather than looking pretty. Inside, the smell of tea is everywhere—it’s in the walls and the floors. We spend a lot of time coordinating with the ships and making sure the containers are loaded up. It’s a lot of logistics and checking schedules, which can get stressful when the weather turns bad. The humidity on the island is no joke, and we all spend most of the day trying to stay cool while we work through the stacks of paperwork. We’re not a small outfit, but on the ground level, it feels like a close-knit group of people just trying to get the job done. We’ve seen the island change a lot over the years, but the work stays mostly the same. It’s about getting the tea from here to wherever it needs to go in the world, one day at a time. It is a busy life on K. P. K. Menon Road, but we are used to it.
