Street 8 in Bhilai Sector 5 is usually pretty quiet, except for when our gates open at B.T.V. Gyan Vidyalaya. We’ve been part of this community in Durg for a good while now. The school building has that old-style look, solid and dependable, with wide windows that let in the breeze when it's not too hot outside. We don't go in for all the flashy new gadgets you see in the big city schools; we mostly stick to the basics here. You’ll find teachers sitting in the staff room grading papers with red pens and talking about the upcoming exams. The playground isn't huge, but the kids make the most of it during their breaks, usually playing tag or just hanging out under the trees. We’ve got rows of wooden benches in the classrooms that have been there for years. Sometimes the bell rings a little late or the power goes out for an hour, but we just carry on with the books open. It’s a local place where everyone knows each other’s names. We see the same faces every morning at the gate, and many of our former students now send their own children here. It’s just a regular school day after day, trying to help the kids learn their math and science without making a big deal out of it. We keep things simple and focus on what's happening in the classrooms. There is always something to do, whether it's fixing a leaky pipe or organizing the library.
