Bhilai Steel Plant

If you head over to Farid Nagar near Nizami Chowk, you’ll find where we are at Bhilai Steel Plant. There is a small kirana store nearby, Nizami Kirana Store, which is where everyone gets their snacks or tea during the breaks. The area in Supela is always moving. Working with steel isn't easy work, and nobody pretends it is. It gets hot, especially during the summer months when the sun hits the metal. We have our routines and we stick to them. Most of the guys have been here for years. You get to know the sound of the equipment after a while. Sometimes the machines act up but we fix them and keep moving. It's just life in Bhilai. We aren't trying to be something we're not. We just make the steel. The plant is a big part of the history here in Durg district. You walk past the shops and the houses to get to the gates. It’s a mix of everything. We don't spend much time talking about what we do, we just do it. The shifts are long and by the end of the day, everyone is tired and ready to go home to their families. It’s been this way for a long time. The neighborhood around Nizami Chowk has grown a lot, but the plant stays the same, just keeping the work going for everyone.
