Bhusana Steel. We operate out of the integrated steel plant division in Meramandali. It’s a massive area in the Dhenkanal district of Orissa. Everything here is on a big scale. When you walk into the plant, you feel very small. We are just one part of the whole operation. My day starts with a long walk from the gate to where our section is. There’s a lot of smoke and steam and the sound of machines never really stops. We deal with the heavy stuff. It’s not a place for clean clothes; you’re going to get some grease on you by the end of the shift. We have a small office space inside the division where we keep our logs. It’s noisy, so we have to shout sometimes to be heard over the plant floor. We eat our lunch quickly and get back to it. The weather in Dhenkanal is often rainy or very humid, which makes the work feel heavier. We’ve got a good group of guys here who don't mind the sweat. We don't have time for fancy meetings. We just look at the schedule and see what needs to be moved. It’s an honest way to spend the day. Every evening, we close up and head home, usually pretty tired. That’s just how life at a big plant like this goes for us. We keep our boots by the door because of the mud. It is a busy life here in Meramandali.
