Goyal Trading Co. is located in the middle of Yadav Market at C-13/18 in Saroop Nagar. It’s a very busy market with people shouting and rickshaws squeezing through the lanes. We deal in wholesale trade, mostly things like grains, pulses, and large tins of cooking oil. Our shop is more of a warehouse than a retail store. The bags are stacked high, and the smell of raw jute and earth is everywhere. I usually sit on a wooden bench near the entrance where I can watch the street and talk to the transporters. We have a lot of regular buyers who have been coming to us for years. We don't use any fancy flyers or advertisements to get customers. The records are kept in thick red books that we update every night by hand. Sometimes we have tea with the other shopkeepers when the market slows down in the afternoon. The floor is made of old stone and it’s seen a lot of traffic over the decades. We don't have air conditioning, just a couple of pedestal fans that move the air around. Dealing with the market committee and the varying prices is a daily task. It’s a lot of negotiation and physical work. We have a couple of boys who help with the loading and unloading when the trucks arrive from the farms. It’s a basic life in a crowded market, but it’s what we know. We just focus on keeping the stock moving and the accounts straight as best we can.
