West India Soap & Industrials Co. is tucked away on New Field Street. It’s one of those narrow streets that stays busy from morning until late evening. We’ve been here a long time, and the building shows its age a bit, but it serves us well for the work we do. We don't have a big sign or a flashy entrance out front. Most people who come here already know the way or they ask a neighbor. It’s a straightforward operation. We make what we make and send it out the door. The space inside is a bit tight because New Field Street wasn't really built for big modern trucks, so we have to be careful with loading and unloading. Sometimes the traffic is so bad that the trucks have to wait around the corner. It’s a small team here. We don’t have layers of management or anything like that. If something needs doing, one of us just goes and does it. The floor is usually a bit slippery from the materials we use, so you have to watch your step. We don't spend money on fancy decorations or expensive office chairs. We’d rather just focus on the work itself. It’s a regular job for regular people. We have seen the city change around this street, but inside our doors, things stay pretty much the same as they were years ago. We just keep the lights on and keep working.
