Selvam Rice Mills

Down at No. 84-G in Kaikatti Pudur, you will find our mill. It is a functional space, built specifically for processing grain. We don't have a fancy entrance or a lobby for visitors. Usually, you just walk in and find us working near the machinery. The sounds of the mill are quite loud, so we often have to shout to be heard over the hum of the motors. Kaikatti Pudur is a small enough place that people generally know who we are. We have been working here for quite some time, dealing with the daily cycles of the harvest. The floors are made of thick stone to handle the weight of the bags. We spend our mornings checking the quality and making sure everything is running without any hiccups. Sometimes a belt breaks or a screen gets clogged, and we have to stop everything to fix it ourselves. It is manual work and it keeps us busy from sunrise to sunset. There is a small area where we keep our tools and another where we sit down for a quick break and some water. It’s not the cleanest environment because of all the chaff, but it is a real workplace. We aren't interested in making it look like something it's not. It’s a rice mill, and we are the people who run it every day. We enjoy the work and the rhythm of the seasons that come and go.
