S. A. Engineering Works

Our workshop is down at No. 4/100 Amman Street in Kalapanaickenpalayam. If you’ve been around Somayampalayam, you probably know the area as it’s got a lot of small shops like ours. It’s a bit noisy here because of the lathes and the grinding machines, but that is just how engineering works. We spend the morning getting the machines ready and checking what jobs came in the day before. Most of the time it is metal parts that need fixing or custom pieces that someone needs for a bigger project. The floors always have a bit of oil on them and there is that smell of hot metal in the air all day long. We don't have a big office or anything, just the shop floor where the machines are bolted down. On Amman Street, you get to know the other people working nearby, and we often share a cup of tea when things quiet down for a minute. The work is dusty and our hands are usually stained with grease, but we just get on with it. Some projects take longer than others, especially when a machine part is old and hard to match, but we figure it out. It is a simple life of measuring things and cutting metal. When the power goes out, which happens sometimes, we just sit outside and wait for it to come back. It is just a regular local shop doing what we know.
