Gnanamani Stores

Being at 519 Rangai Gowder Street means there is never any silence. Gnanamani Stores has been in this spot for a while now. It’s a tight space, packed with bags of rice, lentils, and all the small things people need for their kitchens. Sometimes the smell of spices is so strong it makes you sneeze. We open early because that’s when the older folks come to shop before the heat gets too bad. The shelves are a bit crowded, and honestly, we probably need to organize the back room better, but there’s never enough time. We know most of the faces that walk through the door. You learn who likes which brand of tea and who is going to complain about the price of oil going up again. It’s just me and a couple of others helping out. We don’t have a fancy computer system for everything; a lot of it is still written down in books. The floor is old stone and stays cool, which is nice. We don’t do any big advertising. People just know we are here on the street. When it rains, the water splashes in from the road, so we have to move the sacks back. It’s a lot of lifting and carrying. At the end of the day, my back usually hurts, but the store is still standing and we’ll do it again tomorrow with the same routine.
