Our operations are based out of the V.J. Godowns in Kurudan Palyam Village. It’s a bit out of the way, near the Vada Madurai Post area. Being in a village means we have plenty of space, which is what you need when you’re dealing with tea storage and packing. The godown is a large, high-ceilinged building made of corrugated metal and concrete. It gets pretty hot during the middle of the day, but we have big fans to keep the air moving. A. Tosh & Sons has a lot of history, but here at the warehouse, it’s all about the physical work. We have trucks coming in from the estates and others leaving for the ports or the local markets. Our days are spent counting crates, checking the seals, and making sure nothing gets damp. The ground around the godowns is mostly dirt, so it gets muddy when it rains. We have a small office section partitioned off where we keep the computer and the logbooks. The staff here mostly comes from the nearby villages. We aren't big on corporate meetings or formal clothes. We just wear what’s comfortable for moving around a warehouse and dealing with heavy bags. Most of the time, we’re just busy with the logistics of moving tea from point A to point B. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and keeping track of numbers. We just try to keep things running without too many delays.
