Most mornings I get here to Ayyappa Nagar a bit before the sun is fully up because the local plumbers and guys working on houses nearby start their day early. Sri Maruti Hadware Stores isn't some big fancy showroom; it’s more of a crowded space where we know where almost everything is kept, even if it looks like a mess to anyone else. We are at 19/3 and the shop is usually filled with the smell of cut metal and that specific scent of new plastic pipes. Sometimes a customer comes in looking for a very specific washer or a bolt that they can’t find anywhere else, and we spend twenty minutes digging through old tins just to find that one piece. It’s just how we do things here in Madipakkam. The shelves are packed right up to the ceiling with everything from boxes of nails to different grades of sandpaper. It gets pretty dusty, and my hands are usually covered in some kind of grease or paint by noon. We don’t have a big team, just a few of us who have learned what works for the local weather and the salty air around here. People stop by not just for tools but sometimes just to ask how to fix a leaky tap or which cement is better for a small patch job. It’s a busy life, and the phone rings a lot with people asking if we have things in stock before they walk over.
