Living and working in Park Town means you get used to the noise pretty fast. We are right in the middle of it on Venkatachala Mudali Street. Our shop is at 13 A/34. We sell all kinds of hardware, from basic nails and screws to more specific tools for building. The shop is quite narrow, so we have boxes stacked all the way to the ceiling. Sometimes it feels like the whole place is made of cardboard and metal. We’ve been here for many years, watching the street change while we stay pretty much the same. Customers are usually busy workmen who know exactly what they want, so we have to be quick. We don't have any sales pitch or anything like that. We just find the item, weigh it out or count it, and that’s it. It gets very hot in the summer because there isn't much breeze in these narrow streets. We have a small fan that tries its best. Most of the time, we’re busy climbing ladders to get things down for people. It’s a lot of physical work, especially when the heavy crates arrive. We know the other shop owners on the street well; we all look out for each other. It’s a loud, busy, and sometimes messy place to work, but it’s our life and we’re used to the chaos. Sabari Hardwares is just one shop among many on this street, but we keep our heads down and work hard.
