Prasad

Over at 19 Vanniar Street in Porur, that’s where you’ll find Prasad. We are right in the middle of a very active part of Chennai. The street is always full of bikes and people going about their business. Our place is tucked into the row of shops. It’s been here a long time. The sign out front is a little faded from the sun, but everyone knows who we are. Inside, it’s a bit dark compared to the bright street, which is a relief in the summer. We have shelves lining the walls and a heavy wooden counter where we do all our transactions. I usually sit near the back where it’s a bit cooler. We handle a bit of everything, depending on what the day brings. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so there’s always someone around to help. We don’t bother with fancy displays or big advertisements. Word of mouth works just fine for us. Sometimes the rain floods the street a little, and we have to put up the boards at the door, but that’s just life in Porur. We’ve seen the neighborhood change a lot over the decades. New buildings go up, but we stay right here on Vanniar Street. It’s a comfortable routine. We know the regular customers and they know us. There is always a pot of tea going in the afternoon if someone wants to sit and chat for a few minutes.
