Out here in Ambattur, the humidity really gets to you, especially when you’re working at Pon Engineers (P) Ltd on Vangaram Road. We are situated at number 81 in the Kalyan Industrial Estate, which is a busy little corner of Athipet. The shop floor is always a bit greasy, and there’s that distinct smell of machine oil and metal shavings that you just can’t get out of your clothes. It’s a practical place for people who don’t mind getting their hands dirty. We’ve got a routine that hasn’t changed much over the years. The gates open early, the lights flicker on, and the noise starts up almost immediately. It’s a tight-knit group here; we know who takes their tea with too much sugar and who’s going to complain about the heat by noon. Ambattur is famous for this kind of work, and we feel like just another piece of that big industrial puzzle. We don't have any flashy signs or a big marketing department. People usually find us because they know where we are or someone told them we do okay work. Sometimes the logistics of getting things in and out of the estate is a headache because the roads are narrow, but we manage. It’s just the daily grind of engineering. We fix things, we make things, and we try to keep the machines running without too much trouble. It is not always easy, but it is what we do.
