Lakshmi Engineering Works

Lakshmi Engineering Works is located in the Sidco area of Ambattur. If you know Chennai, you know how industrial this part of town is. We are at 111/96, which is a decent-sized spot for the kind of fabrication and repair work we handle. The air is always thick with the sound of welding and grinding. We have a small crew, mostly guys who live nearby and have been working with machines since they were teenagers. There is no air conditioning in the main workshop, so we rely on big ceiling fans that mostly just hum loudly. We handle a lot of iron and steel, so our clothes usually have holes or burn marks from the sparks. It’s not a glamorous job. We spend most of our time looking at blueprints or trying to fix a piece of equipment that a customer brought in because it stopped working. The office is just a wooden desk in the corner with a phone that rings constantly. We don’t have any slick brochures or sales pitches. We just look at the job, tell you how long it will take, and get to it. Sometimes we run late because a machine breaks down, but we always finish what we started. It’s a busy, sweaty, loud place, but it feels right to be here doing this work every day.
