Mathi Screens

Mathi Screens is tucked away at No. 18 Appaswamy Street. It’s right behind the Madras Kali Temple in Kodambakkam, so it’s usually quite peaceful here, except when there’s a festival going on. Then the whole street comes alive with people and music and food stalls. Our shop is a bit small, and we have frames and ink containers everywhere you look. It’s a hands-on kind of place. You can smell the materials as soon as you walk through the door. We’ve been in Kodambakkam for quite a while now. It’s a neighborhood with a lot of history and a lot of creative energy. We don't have a big office or a lobby. Most people just walk right into the work area. We like it that way because it feels more honest. You can see exactly what we’re working on. Sometimes the weather makes the ink dry slower than we’d like, and we have to adjust our plans, but that’s just part of the craft. We don't use any fancy software to manage our customers. We just write things down in a ledger and keep track of it that way. It’s an old-fashioned approach, but it hasn't failed us yet. People know us as the place behind the temple where they can get things done without a lot of hassle. We just take it day by day and try to do a decent job for whoever comes in. It's a small life, but we enjoy it.
