Irula Tribal Women S Welfare Society

Our society is located at 61 Voc Street in Nehrunagar, right in Chengalpet. It is a straightforward building where we gather to do our work. The Irula Tribal Women’s Welfare Society was started because there was a need for a central place for the women in our community to organize. We don't have a lot of fancy furniture or air conditioning. It is mostly just tables, chairs, and a lot of active conversation. People come in and out throughout the day. Some are looking for help, others are here to help. Chengalpet 603 002 is a place where everyone kind of knows each other, or at least knows someone who knows you. We focus on the practical needs of the tribal women in our area. It is hard work and sometimes frustrating when resources are thin. We don't spend time writing long reports about big ideas. We just see what needs doing today and try to do it. The street outside is usually busy with people going about their business. Inside, we keep things simple. We have some old posters on the walls about local events. There is always a stack of tea cups in the sink by the end of the day. It is a noisy, lively place most of the time. We don't have a fancy website or a social media person. We just talk to people face to face. It’s a real grassroots effort run by local women.
