Our place is at No:46/248 on Peters Road in Royapettah. If you know Chennai, you know how Peters Road can get with all the buses and bikes. Digital Plate System P. Ltd. has been operating from this building for years. It’s a bit of a maze inside with all the heavy equipment and stacks of materials. The air always smells a bit like chemicals and metal, which is something you get used to after a week. We spend our shifts making sure the plates are cut right and there are no scratches. It’s physical work and your back starts to ache by five o'clock. The light in the back room is a bit dim, so we use desk lamps to see the fine details. We aren't a big fancy company with glass walls. It’s mostly concrete and iron here. The tea man comes around twice a day and that’s usually the highlight of the afternoon. We have a few guys who have been here since the start. We know the machines better than we know our own cars. Royapettah is a noisy area but once you’re inside the workshop, the sound of the equipment drowns everything else out. We just focus on getting the orders out to the printers. Sometimes things get delayed because of the traffic on the road outside. We just do our best to stay on top of the pile of work. It gets hot in here during the summer but we manage.
