Ambur Shoes

We are located at 10, Vepery High Road in the Periamet area of Chennai. If you know anything about this neighborhood, you know it is the heart of the leather trade. The whole street smells like leather and polish, which is something you just get used to after a few days. We make shoes here. It is a small place, and it’s usually quite hot because of the Chennai weather and the machines running. We have racks of shoes in different stages of being finished. Some are just soles, others are getting their laces. The workers here are very skilled with their hands, and you can hear the tapping of hammers all through the day. We don't have a fancy storefront with bright lights. It’s more of a workshop where we also sell what we make. There are scraps of leather on the floor and the desks are cluttered with patterns and cutting tools. We drink a lot of water and try to stay cool under the ceiling fans. People come in off Vepery High Road looking for a good pair of shoes that will last. We don’t give them a big sales talk; we just show them what we have on the shelves. It’s a loud, busy, and messy place, but we take pride in the shoes that go out the door. It’s just how things are done in Periamet. We’ve been at this spot for quite some time now.
