Akshaya Caterers

Our catering spot is over in Velachery, right near the Velachery Check Post. We’re at No 6 on Vandikaran Street, which is very close to Gurunanak College. Because of the college, there are always students walking past our door, and the street stays pretty lively. We’ve been at this location for a while now. The building is a bit tucked away, so you have to look for it. Inside, it’s mostly just a big kitchen. We don't have a showroom or anything fancy to look at. It’s all about the stoves and the prep tables here. We wake up very early, usually when it’s still dark, to start the first batch of cooking. It’s a lot of physical labor, lifting big bags of rice and crates of vegetables. Our staff is just a few local people who have been with us for years. We don't wear uniforms, just regular clothes that we don't mind getting a bit of grease on. Sometimes the heat in the kitchen gets to be a bit much, especially in the summer, but we just open the back door and keep going. We mostly provide food for local functions and people in the 600042 area. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s how we make our living. We don't use any fancy machines, just our hands and some basic tools. It’s a bit chaotic when we have a big order, but we always manage to get it done.
